Here's the story behind the closure of All Romance eBooks, formerly a great sales site. Public records indicate this to be a sad, sad story of shenanigans between the founding co-owners, who refuse to pay royalties due to publishers and authors who were doing business with them. Writers and publishers are upset not only because of being cheated—often of thousands of dollars—but because so many of us sold so well through this seller.
The books have disappeared from the removed site, but some publishers are offering to replace them free if you have proof of purchase. Most publishers are quickly finding a new outlet for the books which, if you haven't purchased them, will now be available again for sale.
There's a reason why I've always recommended the website of my publisher as the place to shop. E-publishers have secure buy features, and you can purchase in the format you need for reading.
Income for authors is higher if you purchase from the publisher's site because satellite sellers such as Amazon, Smashwords, iBooks, Barnes and Noble, etc., take a percentage of the retail price listed. They pay publishers the rest, and the author's royalties are based on a percentage of what the publisher receives rather than on the retail price.
If we want to continue supporting this e-industry, it's better to purchase from the publisher's website when possible.
For self-published books you must buy from the satellite sellers where the author has placed their books. My books are all on Amazon, but not necessarily on other sites like Smashwords...yet.
Have a great 2017,

SWEET CHOCOLATE ECSTASY
A romance with paranormal elements
by Dee Ann Palmer
…He was leaning against the huge oak tree near the garage, arms crossed, his white shirt open at the throat, his dark trousers snug over strong thighs and the expected fullness where they met.
Little tremors of desire surged through her.
His long, black hair—hair the color of hers—gleamed in the moonlight. Shadows accentuated the perfect planes of his face and changed his eyes into pools of darkness, but she knew his eyes were the rich blue of sapphires. Almost cobalt…like her eyes.
Primordial joy soared within her as she recognized him. She hugged herself, her body aching from his absence. She had waited a very long time, and he was such a beautiful being standing there in the moonlight, calling to her. She longed to be near him, to be absorbed by him,
overwhelmed by him…

EXCERPT from WHERE EAGLES CRY
On a rancho, when Méjico
ruled California
“I have little time for softness, Tia.”
“Nonsense. Your father ran this ranch alone and no one dared
call him soft, yet this house was filled with his music.”
Reluctantly, Miguel drew a guitar from a recessed area
nearby, tuned the instrument and began to play. His aunt bent to her piecework
again, and Cara sat spellbound by the pure classical beauty of the notes. In
those moments the people in the room did not exist for him, only the music did.
When he sang softly in Spanish as he played, she realized not only was she
hearing a style of music few Americans had ever heard, she was experiencing a
little of the soul of the man before her.
The music faded and died. Miguel smiled almost impishly and
said, “You sigh so sadly, Miss Lindsay. The music did not please you?”
Blushing, she answered, “It pleased me very much. Your
artistry makes my playing seem embarrassingly inept and amateurish.”
She had never seen him smile, and the wonder of it filled
her with warmth.
“Never apologize. Your freshness of touch would delight any
listener.”
Even as she thanked him he turned and put the instrument
away. His face, which had softened into a smile, was a mask again, his manner
that of the aristocrat as he nodded to her and bid Arturo and his aunt
goodnight. It was as if those moments with the music had not taken place.
From across the room, Arturo had watched silently, his
usually smiling face solemn and guarded.

FINE TUNING YOUR CONTEST ENTRY OR SUBMISSION
Every time I write something, I worry that I'm innocently making mistakes. I wish my editors were here to go over this and correct me where I'm wrong, but they are not, so here goes…
As I judge entries for romance contests, it seems to me entrants might be better served if they became familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style and a Merriam-Webster dictionary, which are standards in the industry. Better yet, if they paid for a professional editor to go over their stories and books first. Naturally, there are differences among publishers about certain things they might prefer. For instance, if you write "She showered, shampooed her hair, and scrubbed her nails," do you eliminate that second comma or not? If you keep it, that style is called "serial commas." What about if you end a sentence with the word too, would you put a comma before it? Again, that's up to your publisher's house style.
I read many well written books whose scores I have to lower because of repetitions and errors in grammar and punctuation. I do it because even if the setting, characterizations, motivation, goal and conflict are there, simple things—like too many commas, or how an en, em and a hyphen differ and how to use them—can muddy the waters and slow the reader down. Years ago, another author suggested to watch for too many just, that, very or thing in your pieces. Adverbs ending in ly are another common repetition.
Words ending in ing are gerunds, and there are hyphenation rules for their use too. CMoS 7.85
"Well written" is in this piece. I questioned whether it needed a hyphen, and so I looked it up in Merriam-Webster and found it does not. I've learned that if it isn't in that dictionary as hyphenated or it doesn't fit what the Chicago reference tells you to do, then you leave the mark out. The M-W dictionary has a list at the bottom of the page showing whether or not a hyphen is used with non. (It's nonfiction, by the way, although you'll often see that mistake in printed things.) Great stuff to know, and easy to find. If you go to self, there are pages of words to reference. Self-published, by the way, is correct. Despite reading it online both ways.
Recently, I'm seeing things like Irish-American, etc., being hyphenated when we haven't been doing it that way before now. My 16th edition of CMoS (2010), 8.38, says some people feel hyphenation reflects bias. CMoS doesn't consider the mark represents bias and can be omitted because it "doesn't aid comprehension." However, if your publisher requires it, use it.
I bought these tools because knowing all these rules aren't things I remember from day to day. Maybe you would find them helpful as well.
We pay to enter contests. Adding a freelance romance editor's fee might make you cringe, but it may also be the best money you've ever spent.
Enjoy your week. Stay cool!

Their passion melts the sand to glass on the beaches of southern California.
(Keegan is learning her father's construction business from the bottom up. In this scene she's roofing.)
As she sank to her padded
knees and reached to position a square, she became aware of movement in the
windows of a house below the condos where she worked. This in itself wasn’t
unusual. The half-naked man she saw was.
Keegan inhaled sharply at the
bronzed body with its taut, well-defined pecs, and abs. A dark mat of fine hair
covered his chest, narrowing as it angled down to white Jockeys—the sole item
of clothing covering his body’s perfect proportions. She stopped the wolf
whistle forming on her lips. There was no need to create the illusion among the
men she worked with that she was a female “Peeping Tom”...

#MySexySaturday - Where Eagles Cry
Her eyes locked on him, Cara waited as he weighed her suggestion.
Miguel knew she was not aware of how he had studied her. Of how he had observed her startling green eyes, and skin so fair it was almost luminescent beneath a faint spattering of freckles. She was taller than Desira, and ever so much stronger despite her slender frame. He knew just how much her full breasts had risen when emboldened by her passion for what she viewed as an injustice. He imagined how soft the curve of her hips and how silken her skin would be minus the impediment of all those petticoats and pantaloons.
Passion of a much different sort from what she’d exhibited stirred his loins, something seldom experienced since his wife’s injury—not even when Rosita flaunted herself at him, danced with him. He rested his booted foot on the hearth again to ease the tightness in his pants and take his mind off that part of his male anatomy.
He had known how young and reportedly lovely Cara Lindsay was when he'd hired her. He admitted that in his loneliness he had wanted someone of her gender and age on his ranch. A woman he could talk to, not a child.
He liked her, liked her fire and the way she made him feel alive again. But she was not to know this. At least not now. He sighed. Not ever.

Happy Holidays!
Every night, as my daddy taught me, I knelt by my bed and said my prayers. But tonight, I wanted to ask for something.
“Now I lay me down to sleep … I pray the Lord my soul to take. Oh, please bring me a mommy. Amen”
“Come on, Frankie. It’s time to go to the park,” my dad yelled from downstairs.
“I’m coming, Dad.”
Wearing my play clothes, a long purple shirt and black leggings, I slid my feet into my shoes and ran down the stairs. I loved the noise it made, like a herd of elephants, as my dad would say, but I always pictured horses.
One last bang rang out, as I jumped off the last step and landed on my two feet. I turned the corner to see my dad at the door with our two Cane Corso dogs, Dante and Beatrice. Dad named them after some epic poem, whatever that was. Our dogs were special, though. They were blue, well, they looked grey to me, and their hair was short and thick. I loved running my fingers through it, trying to make it stick up.
They came from Italy, some sort of mastiff. I didn’t know, really, all I knew was they were big, real big and strong. But we trained them so well that they listened to all of their commands.
Dad always let me hold Dante, and I held the leash loosely in my hand, while he healed on my left. He’d stay there, following my every move until I gave him the “free dog” command. Our walk to the park was quick and when we got there I could tell the grass had been just cut. The strong smell hit my nose. I wasn’t sure if I liked it or not.
“Alright, you all go play, and I’ll be right here on my bench, okay?”
“Yes, Daddy.” I unclicked their leashes and wrapped them around my waist, like belts, and threw the ball for the dogs.
Jennifer Garcia's love of travel began when she went to the West Coast to visit her father at the age of three. Her home until she was sixteen was a small coastal town near Boston. She currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, two sons, and two dogs.
Her lifelong love for reading and writing was put aside for many years while she made her way in the world and nurtured her young family. Even though she is older, and life never seems to settle, she's finding her way. Believing she can do it all, with the help of her family, she worked on her first novel during the late hours of the night while balancing the rest of her life during the day.
Jennifer believes in writing love stories that connect families and touch hearts.

ROMANCE FOR TEENS...AND BEYOND by BARB CAFFREY
Then she said
she'd not written any young adult stories. And as I have, why not talk about
the difference between writing young adult novels with romance included as part
of the story, and my stories in Exquisite
Christmas, which deal with a long-term adult romance?
The main
difference I've found in writing romance in my novels AN ELFY ON THE LOOSE and A
LITTLE ELFY IN BIG TROUBLE, which features a teenage couple in Bruno the
Elfy and Sarah, his mostly human teenage girlfriend, and the stories
"Marja's Victory" and "To Hunt the Hunter" in Exquisite Christmas, is that teen
characters don't exactly know what it is that they want. Everything is ahead of
them. They are experiencing love for the very first time, and aren't sure what
they're supposed to be doing – or when they're supposed to be doing it. Whereas
adult characters know exactly what they are doing and why they're doing it, but
don't always know if their wishes are going to be reciprocated.
Anyway, as to
Bruno and Sarah's story…Bruno, you see, isn't from our
Earth at all. (He's from the Elfy Realm, which is in a parallel universe.) He
isn't used to humans or our culture, and comes from a much more rigid type of
upbringing. Where he's from, people are usually introduced to prospective
partners, and Bruno's been told he's too young to start looking. And because
he's an orphan and what amounts to a ward of the state back in the Elfy Realm,
he never thought he had much to give anyone anyway.
And then we have
Sarah, whose situation isn't what it seems. She's been told she's younger than
she actually is, because her parents wanted to keep her inheritance from
themselves. And she doesn't know at this point that she's not completely
human…she just knows she's short, very smart, and is gifted at understanding
other people's emotions. And she, too, has never thought about romance before.
So this is all
new to both of them, and getting to know each other during a crisis situation
(Bruno's mentor, Roberto, has been taken captive by a Dark Elf, who in turn is
being aided by Sarah's parents) has added a great deal of complexity to their
nascent romance.
Clear as mud,
right? So perhaps I should just show you instead…
From AN ELFY ON THE LOOSE, page 265-6:
“Now
that you’re comfortable, will you please tell me what upset you so much?” Sarah
asked.
“I
will, dear,” he said. “But it won’t be easy. Will you sit beside me?”
She
sat next to him on the side of the bed, midway down, and timidly took his right
hand in her own. Bruno tried not to shake at the unexpected contact. He reached
out for her left hand and held it, too. She let him, giving him a soft smile
that told him as no words ever could that he was doing the right thing.
“Roberto
told me what Lady Keisha withheld from you,” he said. “And it’s painful. I
don’t want to hurt you.” He tried to pull his hands away, but Sarah tightened
her grip instead.
“Ignorance
is never good,” she said crisply, showing that uncommon maturity again. Then,
in a different tone of voice, she said, “Look, Bruno, I don’t see how it’s
going to help anything for me not to know. So please tell me?”
~*~
See, when I
wrote all this, I needed to show that Bruno and Sarah were both innocents,
falling in love, uncertain as to what was happening but wishing for it to
continue. They aren't sure what they want, except each other; they'll fight to
the death if they must for one another, and in this situation it may well come
to that.
Note that Bruno
does not take advantage of Sarah. He only goes as far as she'll allow. He is an
extremely polite young man—er, Elfy.
So, from two
youngsters just trying to figure out where their love fits into a crisis
situation and behaving in an age-appropriate way, we move to my adult
characters Marja and Tomas, the protagonists of "Marja's Victory" and
"To Hunt the Hunter." Marja is a shapeshifter and a woman of size;
she is not young, and she doesn't care who knows it. And her lover, Tomas, is a
telepathic mountain Troll, eight feet tall…both of them have found one another
congenial in both the business aspect (they are bounty hunters and detectives,
of sorts) and of course as romantic partners.
Because I'm
dealing with two mature individuals who've known each other for quite some time,
different elements come into play. Marja can be anything she wants, and can
take any form she wants – but I have a hunch that before she met Tomas, she
wasn't accepted much for herself or her talents.
For example, after
Marja and Tomas find a thief in "To Hunt the Hunter," Marja says
this:
"She doesn't love you,
Stefan." I couldn't afford to show him any empathy—the man was a thief—but
inside, I understood. It hurt to be rejected by someone you thought you loved.
::I'm here now, and I love you. Those other fools who passed on you do
not matter anymore. So who cares about them?:: Tomas's voice whispered into
my mind.
~*~
While this is a
very brief excerpt, it gets across the point that Marja knows how it feels to
be rejected. And Tomas tells her, "It doesn't matter anymore," and
calls the people who treated her ill "fools."Isn't that what we want, as adults? Someone who understands us, and will buck us up when we're feeling down?
But that's not the end of the story with Marja and Tomas…oh, no. Because you see, Tomas wants to make it legal with Marja, and he's not above a wee bit of trickery in how he's going to go about doing it. (Further author sayeth not…at least, not about this.)
To my mind,
writing about adults in love is a little different than writing about teens.
Adults know exactly what they're after, while teens are still figuring it all
out. But when love strikes, it's all new to the protagonists, regardless of
age…the trick is in finding that newness, that special feeling, and making
other people feel it, too.

Sleighing and Mistletoe for an Exquisite Christmas
Excerpt:
Sophia gave directions to the best spot for gathering holly
and mistletoe, and Harry steered the horses in that direction, bells attached
to the harness jingling with each step. The weather had been beastly for the
last month, but it had turned the estate into a winter fairyland. Silent
snow-covered fields stretched as far as she could see, and each tree sported a
layer of white, softening the stark look of the winter scene. The sky was
overcast, and she suspected Harry was right to rush them along.
As soon as the sleigh stopped, Reggie jumped out, made a
snowball and threw it at Cora as she exited the sleigh. She yelped and chased
Reggie, Phoebe on her heels squealing with excitement. Sophia watched them with
amusement. Oh, to be a child again.
But she was long past that sort of behavior. She’d had a
season in London, after all. She glanced at Harry and caught a gleam in his
eye. “Do not even think of joining those hooligans.”
A Kiss and a Promise
is a prequel to How To Woo... a Reluctant
Bride. You get a glimpse of Lydia and her brother Harry when they were
young and carefree. The story also introduces two sisters, Sophia and Cora, who
will have their own stories in the How To Woo series.

EXCERPT from WILDERNESS BRIDE by KELLI WILKINS
Hi everyone,
Now he knew why Michelle hadn’t seemed interested in him. She was waiting for him to make the first move. “You liked the kissing we did outside the cabin that day, didn’t you?”
“Yes, and last night, it was nice.”
He stroked her cheek. “Good, because I did, too. I know this is all new to you, and I don’t want to pressure you or scare you off, but I ache for you, darling. And anytime you want to kiss or touch me, or anything, all you gotta do is ask.”
“Anytime?”
“Yes.” He held his breath and prayed he’d gotten through to her.
“Well…” Michelle twirled her hair around her index finger. “If you want to kiss now…I wouldn’t mind. In fact, I’d like it.”
He cupped her chin in his hand. “No, darling, it’s not going to work that way. I want you to kiss me.”
Michelle pulled back. “I can’t go first… I’m not sure…”
“Yes, you can. You know how.” He closed his eyes. “I’ve got all day.”
He waited, hoping she’d break out of her shell and kiss him. A few seconds later, Michelle’s minty-tasting lips covered his. His heart pounded faster and he kissed her back, savoring their tender embrace.
After a minute, Michelle broke the kiss. “Was that good? I’ve never…kissed first before.”
“That was perfect.” He gathered her into his arms. “You want more? Don’t be bashful, you can tell me.”
“Yes, I would,” she admitted.
“Good, I’m glad to hear it,” he said, bending close for another kiss. The instant his lips touched hers, Michelle wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him closer. Eyes closed, he let his long-denied urges take over.
He kissed her slow, delighting in the tingling sensations flooding his body. He wanted her, needed her. As he slid his tongue into Michelle’s mouth, she made a soft mewing noise and arched her back. Michelle’s tongue entwined with his, sending a rush of blood to his groin. He groaned as she kissed him down to his soul.
All too soon, Michelle pulled away. “I think that’s enough for now.”
He stopped even though his cock throbbed for release. “All right. Besides, we gotta get home.” He gave Michelle a quick kiss on the lips. “Otherwise, we’ll be in the woods all night fooling around under every tree...”

Today I welcome author Kelli A. Wilkins as my guest.
Kelli has 19 published romance novels, more than 95 short stories, and 5
non-fiction books to her credit. Her romances span almost every genre— contemporary,
historical, fantasy, gay, and paranormal—and range in heat level from mild to
super-scorching hot. Her newest book, You Can Write—Really! A Beginner’s Guide to
Writing Fiction was released in February 2015. This fun and informative
non-fiction guide is based on her 15 years of experience as a writer, and is
available exclusively on Amazon.
Today she shares a summary and
excerpt from her historical romance Wilderness Bride. If you like a blend
of tender romance and adventure set in the wilds of the Michigan Territory in the early 1800s, this is a book for you! And
if not, I suggest you give this well researched book a try!
A woman running from her past…straight
into the arms of a wild stranger
SUMMARY
SUMMARY
In a
moment of desperation, Kathleen Stanton flees her pampered life in Kingston,
New York and ends up stranded in a small town in the Michigan Territory. Out of
money and lacking a means of escape, she impersonates a handsome stranger’s
mail-order bride. Kathleen calls herself Michelle and begins living a lie with
her “husband,” Luther, in an isolated mountain cabin. She tells herself the
arrangement is temporary until she can move on.
Luther can’t believe his luck when his beautiful blonde bride arrives, but something doesn’t feel right about his new wife. She has terrifying nightmares involving a man named Roger and is reluctant to talk about where she came from. But Luther is harboring a secret about his background and fears Michelle will abandon him if she learns the truth about him—and his family.
The couple tries to maintain their rocky relationship as they work to fight brutal townspeople and overcome harsh living conditions. When circumstances force Michelle to stay longer than she expected, she succumbs to her growing attraction and falls in love with Luther. But when they finally give in to their desires and agree to become a proper man and wife, a dark figure from Michelle’s past catches up with her, putting her and Luther in grave danger.

Halloween was always such a great event at our house when our children were growing up. I was a stay-at-home mom then and made their costumes when they were in elementary school. I still have a smattering of them and their children are marveling at how simple the costumes were in those days!
Happy Halloween!
